How to Replace an audi q7 key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are various connector pins, and each has its own functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. If you are having problems with this sensor, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and audi a1 Keys the 4th was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temp value that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do, as i think i've pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines requires to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing, etc. To do this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.

The signs of a failing G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or audi car key (wikimapia.Org) misfiring when in gear. If you experience any of these issues, it is likely that your sensor is failing and requires replacement audi keys. They are cheap and easy-to-find especially if they're a Bosch unit like ours. You can also choose the GM version of this component is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of numerous issues with your vehicle. It is an important part of the transmission of your Audi A1 keys, as it transmits information to the ECU regarding how fast or slow the engine is turning. When this sensor fails, it could disrupt the performance of the transmission and the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to control fuel, timig and boost, and also transmitting it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those two pins. This is a typical part that is found across the audi a5 key fob 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
