Turn Back, the band's third studio album is a return to a classic sextet format, and it was a more consistent, more powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back reflected the maturation in the group. Bobby Kimball's growing ability to play was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work was sharper, more intricate and less cloned previously recorded recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live concert in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records.
