Robot vacuums remove pet hair, dust and lint from floors before it can settle. They also can avoid obstacles like furniture that is slippery and staircases.

The majority of robotic vacuums require regular maintenance. This involves emptying the bin (and sometimes, rinsing it) and wiping the sensors and cameras. They also need to be connected. Many come with smartphone apps for scheduling, setting up settings, bob Robot vacuum and more.

The iRobot Roomba 980 is the latest in the line of top-of-the-line robotic vacuum cleaners that are an essential part of every modern household. This model has seriously strong suction as well as it comes with a HEPA filter that can assist anyone suffering from allergies. It also comes with a large battery that can clean for two hours and returns to its dock automatically when the bin is full.

Smart mapping is a different feature that helps it identify areas in your home that require attention and provides a path for cleaning around them. We've seen this technology in action and it does a good job of maneuvering around toys that have been placed on the floor, or furniture legs that are sticking out from under the furniture. Roomba also comes with a sensor that can snap Roomba back to reality when it begins to wander away from its original position.

iRobot has also added an additional set of rollers beneath the Roomba that don't have bristles and therefore are more likely to avoid the tangles that previous models. They are also taller and can be placed under beds or couches with low sides. They're designed to make the model more movable on various floor vacuum robot types.

The Roomba 980 differs from other high-end models by its brand new dirt detection feature, which uses cameras to detect embedded dirt. This is a great improvement over the previous version which relied on a sensor-driven pseudorandom coverage method to bounce around the room and clean everything at minimum three times from various angles.

In our tests of its performance, the Roomba 980 did well on both hard flooring and carpets. It scored very well on low-pile carpet and also on mid-pile. It was successful in picking up pet hair however it struggled with the long and thick pet hair that was stuck together.

Despite these slight limitations, the Roomba 980 remains one of our best robot vacuum for carpet and hardwood-performing robots, and it's even close to being as expensive as some of the other top-of-the-line models in this list. It still has a lot of features that we'd expect to see in a flagship model however it lacks all the fancy apps or smart home integration that are found in other top contenders.

The iRobot Roomba is easy to set up and start running right away. After you have removed the pull tab for the battery and yellow bin insert from the undercarriage, all you have to do is plug it into its Home Base docking station or a wall socket, press its large "Clean" button, and let it get to work. It will automatically return to its dock when it runs out of battery or becomes full of sand. There are also indicators at the top of the bin that let you know when the bin is empty, when it is in need of recharging or if it loses Wi-Fi.
