Cheap Multi Fuel Stoves

Summary: These basic and lightweight stoves burn wood, hexamine tablets, gas canisters and white fuel via one nozzle. They're popular during cold weather but they're loud and don't have a simmer control.

Optimus Nova

The Optimus Nova is a multi-fuel stove that can be used with a variety of liquid fuels. It has a quick-priming burner as well as an aluminium pump that self-purges, and a precise simmer control. Its low center of gravity and wide legs make it a sturdy, rock-solid stove. This makes it an ideal stove for backpacking groups, base camps, kayaking, and Arctic camping.

The Optimus Nova is different from other liquid fuel stoves which have issues with fuel that is not burned remaining in the fuel line or the nozzle. This can be resolved by flipping over the bottle. This removes the intake hose from the fuel, and forces it to draw in air, that extinguishes the flame. It also depressurizes the bottle.

This seems like an innovative solution to an old problem and it certainly works. The Nova can be used with any fuel bottle that has an o-ring seal, including MSR bottles. It also comes with a fully-featured stove bag that has separate pockets for spare parts, tools, lubricant and the fuel pump.

This is a great backpacking stove that is suitable for use in the UK. It is particularly ideal for trips, where various fuels are required. Its cost is affordable when compared to canister stoves that have similar capabilities. The Optimus Nova is also easy to maintain and fun to use.

Kovea Hydra

The Kovea Hydra multi fuel wood stove fuel stove was first marketed in 2010 and has been a popular choice for backpackers ever since. The Hydra isn't as well-known with UK backpackers anymore, perhaps because they have been able to catch up with more well-known brands or the newest lightweight offerings from China or Korea. However, that doesn't make it any less effective.

It's a compact and light stove, that can burn all liquid fuels, including white gas and propane butane, using a single nozzle. It's a typical stove design, with an ignition bell that is bolted onto the body, which is then anchored by three support legs that fold out. The pump is located above the fuel line, the generator loop wraps around the inlet and the flame spreader is situated over. The burner itself is a low-speed flame, which makes it a little less affected by winds.

It is a very versatile little cooker because it can be used with either propane canisters or isobutane canisters. It is simple to simmer with isobutane and propane, and it burns all fuels at a reasonable rate. However when using white gas the stove can be a little slower.

The instructions for the Hydra are written in English but they were clearly not written by native English speakers. The instructions warn you against using certain kinds of lighter fluid. If you make a mistake this could cause an accident and land Kovea in legal trouble. Any gas canister that is 7/16ths UNEF-threaded of a trusted brand will work fine.

Primus OmniLite Ti

Primus Omnilite Ti can be an ideal option for those looking for a cast iron multifuel stove cooker that can cook using a variety of fuels. It can be used with petrol/gasoline, gasoline or diesel, kerosene and aviation fuel. It has separate controls for each type of fuel and also allows to alter the size of the flame which is a great feature. The stove comes with a fuel pipe that is flat on the floor and can be connected to the tank in a snap.

While the Primus Omnilite is a fantastic stove, it will require maintenance in order to ensure it is operating properly. In particular it is prone to flare when priming which can be a bit dangerous. This is a common problem with all liquid fuel stoves that use a secondary spindle throttle on the stove's side to vaporize fuel, instead of the generator coil.

It is also important to note that each fuel type needs a different jet. This means that if you're cooking using kerosene, the jet hole must be smaller than when cooking on gas. It's a minor issue however it's something to be aware of.

MSR Whisper Lite

The MSR Whisper Lite stove is one of the smallest, lightest and most affordable cast iron multi fuel stove-fuel stoves. It is also simple to repair in the field. It can be run on canister liquid gas or fuel and includes attachments for both. The new design is lighter by 10% than its predecessor and the burner mechanism was revamped to improve heat distribution. It's ideal for novices or budget-minded backpackers.

It takes a bit of time to install, prime and boil water, but the whistler Lite is a reliable camp stove that will not let you down. The flame is powerful and can easily boil one Liter of water in just two minutes. The only issue is that it doesn't cook as well as other stoves.

MSR created the Dragonfly to be a better burner. It's designed in the same way like the whistler, but it is smaller and provides better performance. It's not as affordable as the Whistler Lite. The Soto Amicus cookset and stove is an excellent alternative that offers similar features for less than half the price. You can also purchase a Whisperlite International or Universal for isobutane canisters as well. Both versions have the same basic design, but the Universal version is also compatible with canister fuel.

Coleman Sportster II

Like many Coleman stoves, this is a basic, rough and ready unit that gets the job done. It's small, self-contained and solid, with the tank on the bottom and the burner on top. This makes it easy to use and is a great choice for those who are new to backpacking, who want to cut weight, and those who keep a few spares in the van.

This stove is designed to burn Coleman's exclusive fuel (naptha also known as "white gas") but it can be used with non-leaded gas too. This option will save you money since one gallon of gasoline could last longer than the conventional Coleman liquid fuel cylinder.

Liquid fuel stoves have a learning curve, as you'll have to pressurize and prime them before you can create a beautiful blue flame. If you get it wrong your fuel may pool, spray beyond the burner, or even sputter. Practice outside before taking it on your trip to master it.

The stove will sacrifice some performance or odor reduction when using non-coleman fuels but this is a trade-off in exchange for the extra versatility it offers. Make sure you purchase unleaded gas and not something that is augmented with alcohol or methanol. This is because these types of fuels can cause the unit to disintegrate, leak, sputter and even explode!

ATG Jiko

It's a compact, reliable system that can burn solid fuel tabs, gels and alcohol with one nozzle. It's a lightweight minimalist design that is priced less than the majority of multifuel stoves and also offers low cost of ownership with fuel being less expensive per liter than gas canisters.

Other multifuel stoves have a separate nozzle for each type of fuel. This makes them difficult to switch between fuels in cold weather or using gloves and can add to their weight. Multifuel stoves that are of the current kind have a single nozzle that can burn multiple fuels, making it simpler. These stoves can be called hybrids or multifuel compressed fuel stoves. They can also be referred to by other names such as isobutane, white gas, kerosene, and unleaded gasoline/car petrol.

Another option is to buy a multifuel stove kit which converts your standard Trangia burner into a multifuel cooker. They are usually available from specialised camping stores and are also available for purchase internationally. These are great for Trangia enthusiasts. They can burn all liquid fuels aside from diesel and, with the right accessories they can even simmer.
