It also has a sensor that will snap Roomba back to reality when it begins to move away from its original location.

In our tests of its performance it was found that the Roomba 980 did well on carpets and hard flooring. Its score on low pile carpet was impressive, and it got a very good score on mid pile too. It did a great job picking up pet hair but struggled with long and thick pet hair that was stuck together.

Despite these minor shortcomings, the Roomba 980 remains one of our best-performing robots, and it's not even far from being as costly as the other top models on this list. It comes with many of the features you would expect from a flagship model but does not have all the fancy apps and smart home integrations you'll see in other top contenders.

The iRobot Roomba is easy to set up and get running right away. After you have removed the battery pull tab and yellow bin insert from undercarriage, all you have to connect it to its Home Base docking station or a wall socket, hit its big "Clean" button and let it get to work. It will automatically return to the dock when it runs out of battery or becomes full of trash. There are also indicator lights on top that indicate when its bin is empty, or when it requires recharging, or if it loses Wi-Fi.
