How to Unlock your Vehicle

Modern electronic key fobs offer more functionality and are more convenient in comparison to traditional manual keys. However, they do require batteries that eventually wear out over time and need to be replaced. If your Volvo key fob is beginning to fail, it's a good sign that the battery is getting old and will need replacing soon.

Fortunately, there are easy steps you can follow to replace your Volvo key fob battery at your own expense. Choose a clean surface to work on. Set out all the tools that you'll need. Find the battery hatch, and make sure it is set to "open." Make use of a flathead screwdriver, coin or any other similar tool to open the hatch off. Next, carefully pry the battery from its socket by lifting it up on the side that is closest to the key-ring loop. Wear rubber gloves to shield the electronic contact surfaces.

After the battery has been removed, put the new one into its socket. Make sure that the positive side is facing upwards and that it is seated in all of the clips. Then slide the cover towards the key-ring loop section until it becomes loose and slips off. Remove the cover to reveal the hidden key blade. This can be used to unlock your vehicle by the driver's side doors in the event that the key fob battery is dead or lost.

The process of changing the battery is easy and requires an ordinary screwdriver with a flat head or plastic pry bar tool. First look for the small hole where the backup / emergency key fob made of steel used to be. Place the blade of a screwdriver tool into this slot and gently pry the rear of the fob open. After you have opened the fob, you can locate and remove the CR 2032 3V battery. Replace the battery, then snap to the fob.

Note: Some older Volvo models have another type of battery that is the CR2025. CR2025 batteries have a thickness of 7 tenths one millimeter lower than a CR2032 and you'll have to be extra cautious when replacing your battery.

Your key fob contains a transponder chip that is programmed to your Volvo. When you insert the key fob into the ignition barrel a transponder chip reads the code and compares it with the one stored in the start inhibitor module of your vehicle. If the codes aren't compatible then your car won't begin. This is a crucial anti-theft feature that prevents your Volvo car from beginning if you use the wrong key.

You will need to take your key with you to a dealer to have it replaced. Your car will also be reprogrammed. This procedure can take up to 10 days and will cost you a significant amount of money. First, remove the non-logo and logo covers from the fob's key and place it on a clean work surface. Locate the grey button on the upper right corner of the fob. Press it down.
