Slot Rankings - How Wide Receivers Score More Touchdowns in the Slot

The slot is a great option for wideouts that are fast, as they are able to open more quickly when their route will not be covered by a linebacker or cornerback. The only wide receiver who isn't speedy on the list that benefits from more slot work is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable target on short and intermediate routes.

Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and other possession-based receivers are at the bottom of the list. They're better on short and intermediate routes rather than in deep areas. Jeudy is expected to be the Rams' primary slot receiver this year is a sleeper choice. Courtland Cooper and Amari Sutton are expected to play a greater role in downfield targets. Hamler is likely to be a star on short-to-mid routes, as that's the way he performed in 2021 while playing for the Bills. Percentage of Snaps In Slot

The percentage of snaps a receiver takes in the slot is an excellent indicator of their ability to run deep routes. However, it's not always a reliable indicator of a receiver's abilities since certain receivers excel in the slot but can't play deep and vice versa.

For example, the Eagles Alshon Jeffery is the leader in the league in the number of targets per game (4.8) but is only placed sixth in the slot receiving score (58.5). This is due to the fact that most of his targets come from the outside and it's difficult to gain a first down in a wide-open deep line in that situation.

On the other hand, certain receivers excel inside, but struggle on the outer. Robby Anderson, for instance, was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He ran 74% of his routes in the slot, compared to only 26% on boundary routes. That's a huge improvement and shows how much more productive Robby Anderson is when he's aligned in the slot.

Additionally, the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines in the middle on the majority of his passing downs, and has a top five slot receiving score (58.5). However, he also played 51% of his perimeter routes last season and is a stud in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers are usually more efficient when they line up inside, since they can get targeted way down the field, and often have one-on-one coverage. You'll find names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper and Julio Jones in our top five.

On the other hand we have some outstanding slot cornerbacks like McDuffie and Moore in this group. McDuffie is the leader in the NFL in forced fumbles having seven, and Moore has the highest tackle-stopping efficiency (-3.5) on this list. Spagnuolo made McDuffie's abilities more effective by putting him in the slot for nickel and dime packages, and then moving him to the outside when playing base defense. Moore's ability in stopping big run plays is a major advantage when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While top NFL receivers like Golden Tate, Larry Fitzgerald, and Baldwin excel on the perimeter but their slot counterparts are also just as good. Wide receivers with a high slot grade have touchdowns that are about the same as those on the outside. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to outside and slot receivers compared to other inside options, such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

That's why it's interesting to see a receiver like CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022, because he plays the themed slot games in three WR sets and flanker in two of the sets. In fact, he's running a higher number of slot routes than the majority of players on this chart. This is an excellent opportunity to increase matchup benefits for your team. It also helps explain why Lamb is the top-rated receiver in our system.

Of course, he also plays the X position and makes huge plays from the perimeter too. Lamb isn't as fast as the other players in this ranking however he's still an elite wide receiver that is well-suited to the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman is another example of a player capable of putting up big numbers on both targets. He has a high slot receiver grade and is among the best players in the league at catching back-shoulder throws, but he's also an excellent opponent for contested catch.

Another player on this list who's a slot specialist in the true sense is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton, who has lined up in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays this season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets, and the fifth-best EPA for runs stopped among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him a key member of his team's defensive unit. On the other hand, he's had trouble to block passes from the outside and has given an unfavorable EPA against these kinds of targets. This is because he's playing with linebackers and safety who can't match Hilton's speed, size or route-running abilities.
