Speedy wideouts are the main benefits of moving into the slot because they generally have a much easier time getting open downfield when their route isn't covered by a linebacker or cornerback. Corey Coleman is the only wide receiver who isn't a fast wideout but would benefit from more slot time. He's a good target for short and intermediate routes.

The bottom of the list includes more possession-based receivers that are more effective on intermediate and short routes than deep ones like Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy, who will be the Rams main slot receiver this year is a sleeper selection. Courtland Cooper and Amari Sutton are expected to play a larger role in downfield targets. Hamler is expected to thrive on more short-to-middle and intermediate routes, because this is where he was at his best when playing for the Bills in 2021. Hamler could be a great replacement for departed wideout Jordan Matthews in Buffalo.

Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The percentage of snaps a receiver takes in the slot is a good indicator of their ability to play deep routes. However, it isn't always a reliable indicator of a receiver's skills because some receivers excel in the slot but aren't able to play deep and vice versa.

Alshon Jeffrey, for example is the league leader in the number of targets he receives per game (4.8) however, he is only 6th in the slot that receives scores (58.5). This is because most of his targets have come from the outside, and it's hard to get a first down in a wide-open deep line in that setting.

On the other hand, some receivers excel at playing inside and can't do much on the outside. Robby Anderson, for instance was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He ran 74% of his route in the slot, as opposed to only 26% on boundary routes. This is a significant distinction and demonstrates how much more efficient Robby Anderson is when he is aligned to the slot.

Additionally it is worth noting that the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines in the middle on the majority of his passing downs and has a top five slot receiving score (58.5). However, he also played 51% of his perimeter routes last season and is a top performer in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers are typically more effective when lining up inside, because they are able to get targeted down the field, and often have one-on-one coverage. There are names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper and Julio Jones in our top five.

On the other hand we have some outstanding slot cornerbacks such as McDuffie and Moore in this group. McDuffie is the leader in the NFL in forced fumbles with seven, while Moore has the best tackle-stop performance (-3.5) on this list. By deploying McDuffie in the slot when they are running nickel or dime packages, and then placing McDuffie on the outside in base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his abilities. In addition, Moore's capability to stop big run plays has been an enormous advantage when playing in the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers like Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's also worth noting that their slot counterparts are just as excellent. Wide receivers who have an excellent slot grade score touchdowns in the same way as those on the outside. This is mostly because quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to outside and slot receivers compared to other inside options, such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

It's interesting to see a receiver such as CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of the sets. He's actually running more routes in the slot than a lot of the players on this list. This is a great way to create matchup advantages for your team and helps explain why Lamb is rated as the top-rated slot receiver in our system this season.

He also plays at the X-position, and can make big plays outside. Lamb isn't as fast as some of the other players in this list, but he's an elite wide receiver that is a good fit in the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman, a different player who can put up big numbers with both types of targets, is a different example. He has a high slot receiving rating and is among the league's top players at catching back-shoulder throws, however, he's also a formidable contested-catch threat.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is a slot specialist. He's been positioned in this position on 85.7 percent of his defensive snaps so far this season. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA among cornerbacks who are aligned in the slot, which makes him an important player in the defense of his team. On the contrary, he's been unable to block passes from the outside and has been able to give an unfavorable EPA against these types of targets. This is because he's been playing with linebackers and safety who can't match Hilton's speed, size or ability to run routes.
