The slot is the best option for wide receivers who are quick, since they can get open more quickly when their route will not be covered by a cornerback or linebacker. The only non-speedy wide receiver on the list who can benefit from slot work is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable player on intermediate and short routes.

The bottom of the list is populated by possession-based receivers who are better on short and intermediate routes than deep ones like Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy is a great option to be a sleeper for this season, as he'll be the primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are expected to be involved on more downfield targets. On the other hand, certain receivers excel in playing inside, but struggle on the perimeter. This is a huge difference and shows just how much more efficient Robby Anderson is when he is aligned to the slot.

Additionally, the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines in the middle on the majority of his passing downs, and has a top-five slot receiving score (58.5). He also played 51% of his perimeter routes and is a master in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers are more effective when lined up inside, because they are able to be targeted down the field and often find themselves with one-on-one coverage. There are names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper, and Julio Jones in our top five.

McDuffie, Moore and other slot cornerbacks are also in this group. Both have been able to generate pressures in the passing game, with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles, and Moore having the highest tackle stop rate on this list (-3.5). Spagnuolo maximized McDuffie's skills by using him in the slot for nickel and dime packages, and then shifting him to the outside when playing base defense. In addition, Moore's capability to stop big run plays has been a huge benefit when playing in the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top winning slots receivers, such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's also important to note that their slot counterparts are just as good. As a whole, wide receivers with a high slot receiver grade score touchdowns roughly at the same rate as those who are on the edge. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks are more consistent with their targets when they throw to slot and outside wide receivers, as opposed to other inside options such as tight ends and backfield passers.

It's also interesting to see a receiver like CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022, as he plays the slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of the sets. Lamb is running more routes in the slot than many of the players listed on this chart. This is a great way to gain matchup advantages for your team. It also helps explain why Lamb is the most highly-rated receiver in our system.

Lamb also plays at the X-position and makes big plays on the outside. Lamb isn't as explosive as some of the other players in this ranking however he's still a high-graded wide receiver who is a good fit in the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman is another example of a player capable of posting big numbers on both targets. He is one of the best players in the league when it comes to catching throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a superb catcher who is contested.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is slot specialist. He's lined up in this position on 85.7 percent his defensive snaps to date. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA among cornerbacks aligned in the slot, making him a valuable player in the defense of his team. He has struggled to stop passes from outside, and his EPA against this type of target is negative. This is a result of playing alongside unsafe linebackers who aren't able to match Hilton's size, speed and route-running ability.
