Slot Rankings - How Wide Receivers Score More Touchdowns in the Slot

Slot Efficiency

Slot efficiency is the goal of maximising the number of slot switches that can be made while not violating certain constraints. Speedy wideouts are the main beneficiaries of moving into the slot, since they are more likely to be open downfield when their route isn't covered by a cornerback or linebacker. The only wide receiver who isn't speedy on the list that benefits from more slot time is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable receiver on intermediate and short routes.

Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and other possession-based receivers are at the lowest of the list. They're more effective on short and intermediate routes rather than in deep areas. Jeudy is expected to be the Rams main slot receiver this season is a sleeper choice. Courtland Cooper and Amari Sutton are likely to play a bigger role in downfield targets. Some receivers are better playing inside, whereas others struggle to do so on the outside. Robby Anderson, for instance, was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He ran 74% of his route in the slot, as opposed to just 26% on boundary routes. This is an enormous difference and shows just how much more productive Robby Anderson is when he's aligned with the slot.

Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, plays inside the majority of the time on his passing downs and has one of the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). However he also played 51% of his perimeter routes last season and is a top performer in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers are usually more effective when lining up inside, as they are able to get targeted down the field and often are in one-on-one coverage. This is why you'll find names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans and Amari Cooper in the top five on our list.

On the other hand we have some outstanding slot cornerbacks such as McDuffie and Moore in this group. Both have been able generate pressures in the passing game with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles, and Moore having the highest tackle stop efficiency on this list (-3.5). Spagnuolo maximized McDuffie's skills by using him in the slot for nickel and dime packs and then shifting him to the outside while playing base defense. In addition, Moore's ability to stop big run plays has been a tremendous asset when playing in the slot offers.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While top NFL receivers like Golden Tate, Larry Fitzgerald and Baldwin excel on the perimeter, their slot counterparts are also equally good. As a whole wide receivers who have a high slot receiving grade score touchdowns roughly at the same rate as players who play on the edge. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks are more consistent with their target distribution when they throw to outside and slot wide receivers than other inside options like backfield passers and tight ends.

He also plays the X-position, and can make big plays on the outside. Lamb isn't as fast as the other players in this list, but he is still a high-graded wide receiver who fits well into the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman is another example of a player capable of posting big numbers on both targets. He has a high slot receiving rating and is among the best players in the league at catching back-shoulder throws, but he's also an excellent player for contested-catch.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is a slot specialist. He has lined up in this position on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays so far this season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets and the fifth-best EPA for run stops among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him an important player in the defensive unit. He has struggled to stop passes from the outside, and his EPA against this kind of target is negative. This has been a result of playing with subpar linebackers and safeties that don't have the same size and speed, as well as his route-running abilities.
