Defra Exempt Multi Fuel Stoves

There is a variety of multi-fuel stoves that are exempt from the DEFRA requirements stoves regulations. Defra approved stoves comply with the regulations of the government and are designed to burn fuel efficiently and emit low emissions.

This is especially important especially if you reside in a smoke control area. Even if you aren't need to, the Defra Stove is better for your chimney, and your neighbors.

Defra Approved

You may have noticed on our site that a number of our wood-burning stoves are listed as DEFRA exempt or DEFRA approved. These terms may appear to be an esoteric term to the typical homeowner, but they are not.

DEFRA is the acronym for Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and they oversee policies and regulations in relation to the environment, agriculture and food. Defra approved stoves have been passed rigorous tests to ensure they adhere to the strict guidelines of the government for emissions of smoke during operation. These stoves are designed to burn fuels such as wood and coal more efficiently. This means they emit less pollutants.

It is good news for those who reside in a Smoke Control Area because the law currently prohibits smoke emissions within these areas unless using a DEFRA-approved stove and an approved fuel. In the past, it was possible to install a non-Defra certified stove in a Smoke Control Area as long as you only used approved fuels, such as wood. From January 2022, the rules will change and non-approved stoves won't be allowed to be used unless equipped with a secondary and tertiary system that can reduce their productions of particulate, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and organic gaseous substances.

Our Defra approved ranges are also equipped with a mechanism to prevent you from closing the top air vent completely. This could lead to the fire smouldering and emitting smoke into your home. Instead, these stoves have an adjustable air flow that will allow you to open the top vent just a bit while still maintaining a safe and efficient burn.

A Defra-approved stove can also be equipped with a 5-inch chimney liner. This is vital because there are numerous building regulations which state that you must have an elongated chimney with at least 5 inches of diameter.

Smoke Control Areas

If you live in a smoke-control area, you'll need a Defra-approved stove to burn wood legally within your home. The stoves have been tested by DEFRA to ensure that they meet the strict standards for smoke emissions required in smoke control zones. You can find the list of areas for which you need a Defra approved stove on the Defra website.

Multi Stoves Fuel

A Defra approved stove, also referred to a DEFRA multi wood burning stove or fuel, will have passed a rigorous test that was developed by the Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). The UK government agency is responsible for ensuring the protection of our natural environment, assisting the food and agriculture industries and ensuring a flourishing rural economic. The tests that Defra Approved stoves must pass are designed to ensure that the appliance produces low levels of smoke and grit when it is in use.

A lot of the Defra Exempt stoves we stock at Stove Supermarket are also multi fuel stoves which allow you to burn authorised smokeless fuels as well as seasoned wood. They are often described as Defra stoves or Defra approved woodburners. They are often abbreviated to SE.

In contrast to older stoves that are generally not suitable for use in Smoke Control Areas, the latest Defra multi fuel and woodburning stoves feature secondary and tertiary air systems in order to ensure that the wood is fully burned prior to exiting the chimney. This is a more efficient procedure than leaving a fire on the stove to burn for a long time and it reduces the amount smoke that could be emitted.

You are still able to use an open fire, barbecues and pizza ovens in your backyard. However, excessive or toxic smoke can be considered a nuisance and you could be penalized. In a Smoke Control Area You are not allowed to use open fires or stoves to burn damp, rotten, or wet wood or any other fuels.

Burning Other Fuels Other Than Petroleum

Defra Approved stoves are engineered to burn a variety of fuels, including wood. They burn wood so efficiently that they comply with the strict government regulations for emissions when operating in smoke zones of control. You can use them in any smoke-control zone, as long as they are burning approved fuels such as logs, Best DEFRA stoves briquettes and pellets. Stoves that have been authorised by Defra will be branded with a SE' symbol, which stands for Smoke Exempt.

What makes the Defra approved stove different from standard multifuel stoves is that they have secondary air vents that pre-heat the air prior to entering the firebox. If you reside in a Smoke Control Zone and you are in a Smoke Control Area, a Defra exempt multi stove can help you comply with the rules. This is because these multi fuel and wood burning stoves have been tested independently to ensure they meet the strict standards of smoke emissions that are required in a Smoke Control Area. These stoves can be used to burn wood or other authorised fuels, such as coal, without having to worry about the quantity of smoke they emit.
