Window Sash Repairs

Sashes for windows must be regularly checked for mold, mildew and other damage. You can save future repair costs by catching problems early before they become out of control.

The sash is an interior frame that is vertically moved up or down in windows that open. This article will show you how to make several easy repairs to your sash.

Weather Stripping

Wooden window sashes can give an elegant appearance to your home. They are also sturdy and can last many years if they are properly maintained. However, they can become damaged or degrade over time because of exposure to the elements and normal wear and tear. However, sash repair experts can bring your windows back to their original condition and keep them looking great for longer than replacement windows.

The first step in repair sash windows is to address weather stripping. It's found on both the sash and frame. It can cause drafts if worn out or loose. Start by identifying the window brand and the manufacturer's date (etched on the corner of the glass or the aluminum spacers between panes). Then, remove the sash and mark its height and width, so you can find the appropriate weather stripping replacement to match.

Then, remove the sash from its holder and place it on flat surfaces to allow you to reach all four sides. If your sash has a double-hung, you'll also need to remove the weights and their ropes which should have slipped into the pocket of the jamb liner. Once you've taken the sash off and the weights, use a utility knife to cut away the weather stripping that was formerly in place at the corners, and then take it off by hand or using a putty knife.

After the sash is cleaned, you can replace the stoppers that separate the two sashes. These are long pieces that divide the sashes. Pam prefers to replace them with standard 1/2-inch-by - 3/4-inch window trim from the lumberyard, however you could also use scrap wood.
